    BARBARA GURWTIZ

     b. 1942,

Celebrated artist Barbara Gurwitz brings a colorful Southwestern panaroma alive like no other.  Unique and undulating, like the landscapes of our corridor, she has found shapes and vibrations of colors that resoante.  Passionate about the villages especially, the work is pastoral and intimate.    Her current wave of an interest in working with geometric shapes in an succinct abstraction. Desiring greater simplicity, working with a limited palette she begin with editing until the composition made a painting interesting, calming and elegant

A prolific artist for over 55 years, she has considered Arizona home since 1979 after painting her way through Boston, New York, California, and Madrid, Spain, Ithaca, Greece, and Provence, France.  Her work, studio-based, inspired by photographs and sketches of her journey, has phased through figurative, surrealism, fauvism and expressionism.

Her current wave of an interest in working with geometric shapes in an succinct abstraction. Desiring greater simplicity, working with a limited palette she begin with editing until the composition made a painting interesting, calming and elegantShe began to think of her paintings as meditations. Some of her  abstractions in form were the basis for a show at Gallery 2Sun in 2020.  Some of the pieces conceived at that time are in this show.

The core of this current exhibit is a revisit of her landscapes beyond fauvism using acrylic in a vibrant folkloric near naive style.  Using old drawings from the sketchbooks of wanderings, she has been re-inspired to let the skies and hillsides of the open road be the basis for a new heartwarming body of work. The palette is as unique as the high chapparal and the skies go on forever.
